My name is Susana Loureiro and I’m an English to European Portuguese translator. I’ve specialized in audiovisual translation, mainly subtitling, since the beginning of my career in 2014. I’ve worked as a project manager for two companies, taking care of AVT projects with multiple languages and dozens of translators, and also as a reviser. In 2021, I’ve decided to take the leap and become a full-time freelance translator and subtitler.
I graduated in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, with a major in Modern Languages and a minor in Translation, from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon in 2014. For my professional development, I have done a workshop on Translation and Surtitling for the Theatre in 2019 and a Text Revision course in 2020.
Since 2018, I’ve attended AVT conferences, like Languages & the Media and Media for All. In 2019, I was a speaker at the TranslateLisbon conference and, in 2021, I’ll be speaking on APTRAD’S International Audiovisual Translation Conference about pricing and project management.
I’m passionate about making audiovisual content accessible for all audiences in a way that will make it seem like they’re not reading a translation. I defend the improvement of subtitling quality, both technical and linguistic, so the viewers have the best experience possible.
Thanks to my creative and faithful translations, I’ve been interviewed over the past few years regarding subtitling and its challenges by CINEBLOG, Comunidade Cultura e Arte, MAGG, and most recently the podcast Seriólicos Anónimos.
I cofounded ATAV in 2019 and have been its president since. I’m also a member of ESIST.
